Curtis Thompson only threw four times Saturday at American JavFest in East Stroudsburg, Pa., but maybe it's for the best that he save a little something for July 21.

The U.S. runner-up in the men's javelin launched a huge mark of 287 feet, 9 inches (87.70m) to not only break the meet record, but move to No. 3 on the all-time American list. The distance of that throw was the seventh-longest in U.S. history.

Thompson's throw, a personal record by nearly 16 feet, also moved him to No. 7 in the world this year. He is scheduled to compete at the World Championships with Virginia standout and U.S. champion Ethan Dabbs, along with 31-year-old Tim Glover, the fifth-place finisher June 26 at nationals.

RESULTS

In the women's competition, Avione Allgood, who was third at the U.S. Championships and did not have the World Championships standard, threw a lifetime-best 203-10 (62.13m) to capture the victory.

That throw, which came on her first attempt, was her first 200-footer and moved her up to No. 6 in U.S. history.

She beat U.S. champion Kara Winger, who was third with 197-1 (60.08m), and Ariana Ince, who was second at the USATF Championships and second on Saturday with 203-4 (61.97m). Winger and Ince, as well as Maggie Malone, are all on the Team USA roster set for the World Championships.
