A Brief Chat With Shalane Flanagan – Part 2August 17, 2011 12:28 am
By Peter Gambaccini

Shalane Flanagan, the 2008 Olympic 10,000-meter bronze medalist and American recordholder in 30:22.22, will run the 10,000 at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea on August 27, the first day of the Championships. Her 30:39.57 on May 1 in Palo Alto is the second fastest 10,000 in the world for 2011; her winning time at the USATF Championships was 30:59.97. Flanagan, 30, also has American-leading times in 2011 of 14:45.20, 14:46.80, and 14:49.68 (in Paris, Stockholm, and Eugene, respectively) for 5000 meters and 8:39.18 for 3000 (indoors) and ran 4:06.63 for 1500 meters in Monaco. Her career best 5000 is 14:44.80. She has American indoor records of 8:33.25 in the 3000 and 14:47.62 in the 5000.
In February, Flanagan won the USA Cross Country title for the second straight year  and then helped the Americans to a second consecutive team bronze at the World Cross Country Championships – but this time she also emerged with her own individual bronze, finishing behind Kenyan superstars Vivian Cheruiyot and Linet Masai. She made her marathon debut in New York City last November with a second place 2:28:40. Originally from Massachusetts, Flanagan was a two-time NCAA Cross Country champ and an NCAA Indoor 3000-meter winner for the University of North Carolina. She now resides in Oregon and is coached by Jerry Schumacher. This is the second part of a two-part Chat.
