World Championships pole vault bronze medalist Ernest John Obiena from The Philippines joins DyeStat editor Doug Binder to discuss the aftermath of his historic achievement in Eugene. Obiena became the first athlete from The Philippines to make the final at a World Championships as well as the first to win a medal after clearing 19-5.75 (5.94m) in the pole vault. Obiena, who lives and trains in Formia, Italy with coaching legend Vitaly Petrov, has endured a difficult year after he was accused of mishandling funds sent to him from Philippines Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) for his training expenses and to pay his coach. An audit cleared him of any wrongdoing but the federation took him off the national team and he was not allowed to represent the country at the World Indoor Championships in March. He has still not been fully reinstated as a member of the national team, although PATAFA has new leadership. Upon returning to Italy, Obiena learned he was to receive 250,000 pesos ($5,000) from the Filipino government's sports commission and he quickly decided to donate the unexpected money to Lydia De Vega's family for medical expenses. De Vega was the Philippines' most successful track athlete of the 1980s and 1990s and has stage 4 breast cancer. Obiena recounts his upbringing in track and field and how a chance meeting with Sergey Bubka changed his trajectory as a young pole vaulter who dreamed of competing at the Olympic Games.
