Rather than enjoying a relaxing summer before her final year of college, soon-to-be Southern Illinois senior Jeneva McCall has been training hard in preperation for her first World Championships appearance. In just her third year of throwing the hammer, McCall was the NCAA runner-up both indoors and outdoors. Her collegiate season began last December, nearly nine months ago. After the NCAA Championships, she kept competing and placed fourth at the US Championships and then threw the world qualifying distance to earn a spot on the national team. While she will likely need another PR to advance to the final, this seems to be one of the first highlights in what will be a long career ahead for McCall.

The meet has several other former collegiate throwers, including the two top Americans. The other throwers are: two-time NCAA champion and former record holder Jennifer Dahlgren (ARG / Georgia '07), former NCAA champion Eva Orban (HUN / USC '09), five-time NCAA All-American Amber Campbell (USA / Costal Carolina '04), former NCAA shot put champion and hammer runner-up and Jessica Cosby (USA / UCLA '05). In addition, Heather Steacy of Canada threw for the University of Lethbridge in her native country.
