American medal count continues to grow after strong Sunday

By Scott Bush, DyeStat Editor

It was a busy day Sunday in London, day three of the IAAF World Outdoor Championships. After an exciting morning session, which saw American Amy Cragg earn bronze in the marathon, becoming the first American woman since 1983 to capture a medal in the event at the World Championships, Team USA racked up three more medals on the track and in the field during the evening session.

Putting a gold stamp on the day for Team USA, Tori Bowie won a thrilling women's 100-meter contest. After a lackluster start and slow build-up coming out of the blocks, the Olympic silver medalist in Rio charged to the finish, overtaking the entire field and outleaning Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast in the final stride, winning 10.85-10.86.

Watch What Tori Bowie Had to Say After Her Gold Medal Performance

Bowie's gold medal performance marked the first time an American had won the women's 100 at the World Championships since Carmelita Jeter in 2011. Her win, along with Justin Gatlin capturing the men's 100 title Saturday, secured the first U.S. sweep at worlds since 2005. Bowie's time was a seasonal best, giving her four 10.90-or-faster marks in 2017 and the fourth straight year she's run 10.85 seconds or faster.

Americans continue to bring home the hardware

Adding to the Team USA medal haul in London:

  • Joe Kovacs nearly earned gold on his final throw in the men's shot put competition, just barely scratching the toss. Kovacs instead had to settle for silver, finishing behind New Zealand's Tom Walsh. Kovacs' fellow Americans Ryan Crouser, Ryan Whiting and Darrell Hill finished 6-7-11 respectively.

  • Sandi Morris came away with a silver medal in the women's pole vault, finishing only behind rival and Olympic gold medalist Katerina Stefanidi. Morris cleared 15-7 (4.75m), but couldn't match Stefanidi's 16-1.25 (4.91m) winning effort, which set a Greek national record.

Congrats to Bowie. I am very happy for her. It would have been great to see Olympic 100 champ Elaine Thompson healthy and running at full strength against Bowie. Thompson has been battling an achilles injury. She had a great drive phase in the heats but we didn't see that again. It is clear that her achilles is affecting her performance.
Ryan Crouser does not look like the guy that threw 74' at the US championships and Emmanuel Korir does not look like the athlete that ran 1:43.10 at Monaco and beat a very good field. Injuries played a big part on day 3.
