Locals in race for 2012 Games

Trio to compete in South Korea 

The 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, are less than a year away and three athletes with local ties continue to inch their way closer to a spot on Canada's team.

Decathlete Jamie Adjetey-Nelson, javelin thrower Scott Russell and 800-metre specialist Andrew Ellerton were named to Canada's 32-member team Thursday for the 13th World Track and Field Championships, which run Aug. 27 to Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea.

"This is the biggest meet of the year and the biggest meet of my life right now," said the 27-year-old Adjetey-Nelson, who is a University of Windsor and St. Joseph high school grad.

"This meet is second only to the Olympics. No one skips this meet.

"If you're trying to be an Olympic champion, the next thing is a world champion."
