That finish is actually better than the PRs would have suggested (I think it was 6-12-20 when seeding by PR's). Not as good as the Olympics, and it's too bad we missed out on a medal, but still a pretty good day. I didn't see the race, but it says in the splits Ritz was leading at 9k? I need to track down that video...

He lead long enough, 200m maybe, to be at the front at 9k. No more.

Gunnar Nixon is doing work! Beat Eaton three events out of five on the first day. (Of course the two losses were substantial gains for Mr. World Record Holder).

Some great marks today from Gunnar and, other than the HJ, good day for Eaton. Nixon's day 2 isn't as strong, so we'll see how he holds up. Sorry to see the other two out, though.

When I stopped watching last night, Taiwo was in 10th place... today, I was ready to make a thread on how awesome the former NW Preps were doing (Eaton leading the decathlon and Symmonds moving on in the 800). Then, I look at the Day 1 scores for the Decathlon, and feel a little bummed. Taiwo was off to a good start, and had to pull out even before his best event. Hopefully he'll make the team again in 2015.

Wow... Galen is still right there. Just three seconds out of gold. Can't wait to see how they last 2-3 laps unfolded.

All of us would have loved to see Team USA guys higher than 4-10-18, but while the finish isn't as good as Rupp's silver last year, I'd still say "not bad!"

Gotta say pretty amazing results for the Italian and Japanese women in the marathon. That has to feel like a great breakthrough in those countries.

Not sure if I get your question. You mean has a reigning WJR champ ever won seniors the next year? I'd guess not.

Has there ever been a reigning world jr and world sr dec champ?

As far as other qualifying, a mixed bag: Obviously the men's 800 and women's 400 pretty good for Team USA, and looks like the 100 is solid. But to have only two advance out of 10 in the W-3k ST, W-DT, M-HT, and M-PV combined was disappointing.

I thought Deena's finish was solid, but was hoping the others would finish a little higher up there, too. I understand the conditions were brutally hot, with a head-scratching starting time of 2 pm local. They started very conservatively, then moved up continually after 10k. A lot of women DNF'd, so maybe they felt that was the only doable strategy. Deena was in top 15 pretty much the whole way.
