Mike Powell reflects on the 30-year anniversary celebration of his long jump world record of 29 feet, 4.50 inches (8.95m) in the fifth round at the 1991 World Championships to capture the gold medal in Tokyo, Japan, during a ceremony Aug. 30 at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. Powell, who also boasts the all-conditions best mark in history at 29-6 (8.99m) from 1992 in Italy, captured World Championship gold medals in 1991 and 1993, along with Olympic silver medals in 1992 and 1996. The world record by Powell, who attended Edgewood High in West Covina along with UC Irvine and UCLA, is the third oldest among men's track and field athletes, trailing only the all-time discus mark of 243 feet (74.08m) set by Germany's Jurgen Schult and the hammer throw record of 284-7 (86.74m) achieved by Russia's Yuriy Sydeikh, both performances achieved in 1986.
